Palampur, Himachal Pradesh – Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (CSKHPKV), Palampur, celebrating 46 years of dedicated service in the agricultural education, research, and extension sectors. Established on 1st November 1978, and named after Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar in 2001, the University has continually advanced its mission of uplifting agricultural practices, empowering rural communities, and furthering agricultural research with a focus on Himachal Pradesh’s unique hill agriculture.
Starting from its inception around the College of Agriculture, founded in 1966, CSKHPKV has grown to encompass four constituent colleges: the College of Agriculture, Dr. G.C. Negi College of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, the College of Community Science, and the College of Basic Sciences. Together, these colleges offer an extensive academic portfolio of 7 Bachelor’s, 26 Master’s, and 15 Doctoral degree programmes. More than 9589 students have passed out from the University since its inception. The alumni of the University are well placed with several of those occupying higher positions in Government & private sectors and also in foreign countries. At present more than 20 alumni are serving at apex positions abroad.
Notably, CSKHPKV ranked 19th among agriculture and allied sector institutions nationally and 15th among state agriculture Universities, as per the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF-2024).This year marks a pivotal point for CSKHPKV as it became the firstUniversity in the State to implement National Education Policy 2020 by initiating 4-year Under Graduate honours degree with research in Basic Sciences and has also implemented NEP-2020 in B Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture programme. With more than 2,000 students enrolled from 14 Indian states and six countries, CSKHPKV is shaping a globally diverse agricultural academic community. Students are placed at various prestigious positions across the globe.
The Directorate of Research spearheads research initiatives in agriculture, veterinary sciences, community sciences, and basic sciences across the main campus, three regional research stations, and 13 research stations located across the state and have developed 182 high-yielding crop’s varieties, more than 165 farm technologies and farm tools. To safe guard the biodiversity and farmers interest university focussed on the registration of varieties with PPV&FRA. With the efforts of university farmers have been bestowed with savour awards nationally for maize, kala zeera and cucumber for the conservation of land races. University is committed to provide quality seed of improved varieties to the farmers. The University is a national leader in organic and protected agriculture, with the establishment of Advanced Centres for Natural Farming and Protected Agriculture. With externally funded projects and collaborative programmes with premier national and international institutions, 35 All India Coordinated Research Projects CSKHPKV is committed to address contemporary agricultural challenges. 45 MOUs for academic & research collaborations with premier institutes and licensing of universities varieties with 20 companies reflect the commitment to fulfil the research and extension mandates.
The Directorate of Extension Education remains pivotal to meet the farmers’ need thorugh trainings and outreach programmes.
