Dr. Sushil Chander: Outstanding Contribution to Healthcare Services

Dr. Sushil Chander, a resident of Upper Bhili in Mandi district, has played a pivotal role in strengthening and advancing the healthcare services of Himachal Pradesh during his 33 years of service. The son of late Shri Gopi Chand, a former soldier of the Indian Army, Dr. Chander has achieved numerous milestones in the fields of medicine and administration.
He completed his MBBS from S.R.T.R. Medical College, Ambajogai (Maharashtra) and pursued a Master’s degree in Epidemiology from the National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai. Starting his career as a Medical Officer in 1988, Dr. Chander dedicated himself to improving healthcare facilities in rural areas.
During his tenure as Chief Medical Officer (CMO), he significantly contributed to the healthcare system in Kullu district. Under his leadership, Kullu was honored with the “Kayakalp” award. Additionally, the district received a Silver Medal from the Government of India for its exceptional performance in the TB control program.
Dr. Sushil Chander was recognized with the “Himtaru” award in 2014 and the “Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2022 for his outstanding contributions. For his exemplary work in the Ayushman Bharat and Himcare schemes, he was also named the “Best Performing CMO” by the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh.
Dr. Chander has represented Himachal Pradesh on international platforms as well. He participated in global conferences held in Taiwan and Malaysia, focusing on key research areas such as tuberculosis control and improving nutrition for pregnant women.
His contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic were remarkable. Through effective strategies, he successfully managed to reduce mortality rates. Additionally, he actively served as the President of the Himachal Pradesh Medical Officers Association.
