Pandit Amar Nath Sharma: A Freedom Fighter and Social Reformer

Pandit Amar Nath Sharma was a prominent freedom fighter from Lahore. His visit to Palampur (now in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh) during the Quit India Movement marked the beginning of a new phase in the region’s national struggle.

Sharma was pursued by the Imperial police for his involvement in the freedom movement. When he reached Palampur, evading arrest, he realized that the political environment of the region was not conducive to agitations. Therefore, he introduced a new nationalist strategy. He established several educational institutions and medical centers, which not only empowered the hill people socially and educationally but also kept the spirit of patriotism alive. Kanhiya Lal Butail, another notable freedom fighter, worked alongside Sharma in this social and national revolution in Palampur.

The contributions of Amar Nath Sharma and his comrades were instrumental in the region’s growth and development. His activities provided a positive impetus to Himachal’s anti-British struggle.

Early Life and Education
Pandit Amar Nath Sharma was born in February 1898 to Pandit Mahadev Sharma and Shrimati Saraswati Devi, a deeply pious and devoted woman. His father wished to provide him with a good education so that he could secure a respectable job in the government sector. However, the plight of the nation always occupied Sharma’s mind. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s call to join the freedom struggle, Sharma abandoned his medical education to actively participate in the movement.

Work with Sanatan Dharma
Sharma began spreading awareness about Sanatan Dharma. During that time, Goswami Ganesh Dutt, inspired by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, was actively involved in promoting Sanatan Dharma in western India by establishing schools, colleges, temples, and cowsheds. Amar Nath Sharma came into close contact with Goswami Ganesh Dutt and dedicated himself to societal service.

In 1923, Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya introduced Sharma to Goswami Ganesh Dutt, describing him as a “true diamond” capable of spreading the principles of Sanatan Dharma in all directions. Recognized for his commitment, Sharma became a key figure in Sanatan Dharma institutions and was entrusted with the responsibility of spreading education and awareness in the Shivalik Hills, a region plagued by illiteracy and poverty.

Achievements in Education and Healthcare
Sharma made Baijnath the headquarters of his activities and quickly established numerous educational and healthcare facilities in the region. These included 24 high schools, polytechnic colleges, a B.Ed college, and JBT schools. Additionally, he set up Ayurvedic medical centers, temples, and units of the Sanatan Dharma Pratinidhi Sabha and Mahavir Dal.

His efforts also countered religious conversions by fostering pride in ancestral faith and heritage, helping many return to Sanatan Dharma.

Role in the Freedom Struggle
Besides promoting education and religion, Sharma was deeply involved in the freedom movement. He was imprisoned four times for his protests against British rule. In 1947, during the painful partition of India, he provided shelter to countless refugees in Kangra and other parts of Himachal Pradesh.

Political Career and Later Life
Encouraged by Goswami Ganesh Dutt, Sharma entered politics and served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh from 1957 to 1967. During this time, he also held the positions of Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Hindi Regional Committee.

In 1971, Sharma retired from politics to focus entirely on social service and activities related to Sanatan Dharma. He served as the General Secretary of the Sanatan Dharma Pratinidhi Sabha and was the head of Mahavir Dal. His work led to the establishment of several educational institutions, including the Goswami Ganesh Dutt Sanatan Dharma Colleges in Baijnath and Rajpur, Himachal Pradesh.

Legacy
Pandit Amar Nath Sharma remains a true inspiration for those who aspire to serve society and bring about positive change. His tireless efforts for education, social welfare, and the freedom movement continue to motivate generations.
