Himachal’s ‘Daughter of Jwalamukhi’ Aastha Sood Creates History at Oxford University

Jwalamukhi, Himachal Pradesh: Aastha Sood, a PhD scholar from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), has brought immense pride to her home region and state by presenting her research at the prestigious University of Oxford, England .

Aastha, the daughter of Rajiv Sood and Usha Sood from the Jwalamukhi area, is currently pursuing her doctorate in the Department of Economics and Sociology at PAU, Ludhiana . She was selected to present her paper at the ‘Research and Mentoring Workshop in Honour of Uma Lele’ , held at Brasenose College, Oxford, on August 24–25, 2026 .

The workshop was part of a special initiative by the International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE) to honor the legacy of Dr. Uma Lele, a former IAAE President known for her work in rural development and gender issues . The event brought together distinguished scholars and early-career researchers from around the world, providing a platform for academic exchange and mentoring .
