Dr Rakshak Kumar, Scientist, Biotechnology Division, CSIR-IHBT, Palampur, and team conducted an awareness and training programme on 10-14th October 2022 in different villages under Tandi, Gaushal, Muling, Shansha and Keylong Gram Panchayats of Lahaul and Spiti districts. The programme was focused on creating awareness of the newly designed dry bio toilet (ComSan-DT) that is proposed to be installed at different locations of Lahaul valley under the Fast Track Commercialization project funded by CSIR under 4th tranche E3OW theme. The proposed dry bio toilet will be an aesthetically improved version of traditional Himalayan dry toilets, and it will be utilizing the earlier developed product “Compost Booster” for faster and more efficient degradation of human waste in the cold Himalayan region for generation of quality compost. During the visit, the team met the Pradhans of Gram Panchayats and finalized the site at different villages for the installation of the proposed dry bio-toilets. The team also visited Dr Rohit Sharma (Assistant Commissioner to Deputy. Commissioner) and Mrs Chima Angmo (General Manager, Distt. Industries Centre) at Keylong to discuss the proposed project and the involvement of district authority for the sustainability of the project through the participation of local entrepreneurs. The district authorities have shown interest in the project and have extended full support in the proper
implementation of the project, they also would help in the selection of local entrepreneurs for the project under schemes like Mukhya Mantri Swavalamban Yojana or CM Startup scheme of Himachal Pradesh.
